Don’t Forget The Wedding Flowers!

Posted by Earlan on November 18th, 2010  •  No Comments »

Next to her gown and cake, a bride tends to spend a lot of time picking out the right flowers for her dream wedding. Why would she not when without flowers, no wedding would be complete. For hundreds of years, flowers have been an integral part of wedding ceremonies and receptions. The ancient Greeks hold the first actual recorded use of flowers in weddings where the bridesmaids are tasked to create decor that includes the bride’s bouquet, boutonni?re, garlands, and poesies for guests. May you have grand or intimate, indoor or outdoor wedding, flowers is sure to be part of your celebration. Like most celebrations, the first thing you need to put into consideration in planning weddings is the amount you are willing to spend. For those on a tight budget in the Philippines, you might want to check if your church of choice has already “packaged” flowers in the overhead cost. You can also take a quick trip to The Flower Market (the Philippines’ most popular resource for flowers purchased in bulk) to have a good grasp of how much the raw cost is. If you need to choose where to spend on flowers between the church and the reception, go for the later. It will be celebrated longer (the wedding itself lasts for only two hours max while the reception’s two hours minimum) and can create a wonderful atmosphere paired with good food and an engaging program. After deciding on how much to spend (and no alterations please!), look for your flower supplier at least a year and a half in advance. Do your homework by conducting background checks and interview your choices (best done in person). Once you have decided on whom to get, work on your color scheme and arrangement. The location, season (thank heavens we only have two here in the Philippines), wedding theme, and bridal gown should all be taken into consideration. Three major displays should be appropriate for ceremonies held in medium sized churches. These flowers are set-up by the entrance and by the altar. Do make sure that the seats by the aisles are encrusted with minor displays as well. Skipping such will make the venue too bare. Whatever your decision is, make sure that you and your supplier understand and take note all of your ideas and specifics. Do request for sketches or simple models before you sign a contract. If your supplier can provide you a model, have someone take your photo next to or holding (whichever is appropriate) it. That should give you an idea if your supplier can actually dispense your agreed design.

Why Do We Give Flowers on Valentine’s Day?

Posted by Earlan on November 17th, 2010  •  1 Comment »

While it is a very much celebrated tradition here in the Philippines, not everyone is aware how exactly Valentine’s Day came about. We of course associate it with St. Valentine but do not know how he was actually recognized as the saint of lovers. Before you send that red, heart-glazed greeting card, read on and be initiated. Prior to the third century of Rome, the 14th of February is nothing but an ordinary day. During his reign, Emperor Claudius II banned marriage for young men as they seemed to be better soldiers than husbands and fathers. This discrimination made a young priest named Valentine furious. Such injustice caused Valentine to rebel against the emperor by continuing to perform marriages among young lovers in secret. The emperor naturally discovered Valentine’s secret. The priest was arrested, jailed, and sentenced to death. As the emperor’s luck would have it, Valentine fell in love with his daughter who frequently paid the prisoner a visit. Before he caught his last breath, Valentine sent his beloved a letter and signed it: “from your Valentine. ” The priest was executed on February 14, 270 AD. Almost 300 years after, Pope Gelasius imposed that February 14 be a day to honor Valentine, who by that time was declared as a saint. For thousands of years, the feast of St. Valentine has been one of the most popular customs that is much to the delight of flower shop owners and the dread of most men. Here in the Philippines, it definitely is the second most popular feast next to the tie breakers Christmas and New Year. Hands down: flowers take the cake this time of the year being the most popular gift of choice. Why wouldn’t it be when these cut blossoms are readily available and have long symbolized fertility, love, marriage, and romance?Floriography or speaking in the language of flowers flourished in the Middle Ages when courtship is severely prohibited. How lovers communicate for weeks or even months through flowers alone is just unbelievable! While we are one SMS or e-mail away today, you’ve got to admit that we still speak the language of flowers. It is very evident here in the Philippines how this dialect never seems to wilt away. While flowers can be given year round, sending a dozen or two during the 14th of February is extra special as it is paired with the thought of eternal love, similar to the life Valentine has lived.

Flowers Will Always Be Nice

Posted by Earlan on November 15th, 2010  •  No Comments »

I can clearly recall the first time I received flowers. I was in kindergarten then and I got freshly picked roses from one of my classmates who claimed to have a crush on me. I naturally said thank you and smelled it. I remember frowning after sniffing the pretty little thing because it didn’t smell in any way nice. Fast forward to high school, I got my first flower bouquet. They were of all flowers, yellow and white roses. While I did not bring them anywhere close to my nose, I walked around school with a very wide grin, parading the beautiful gift I just received. Bad news for men: not all women react to flowers like me. Because we have naturally different personalities, please do not be offended when women do not appreciate cut plants like how actors portray in movies. Some are just not exactly fond of plants. Period. I have good news though: if you still want to give flowers because of its sentimental value, you have other options. Flowers are hands down, beautiful and have been long a symbol of love, affection, and gratitude. Women naturally like gifts associated with these words and flowers are your best bets. Men are in luck because flowers do not just grow on soil today. They have actually managed to grow from boutiques, art stores, supermarkets, and bookstores!Taking a trip to the mall can overwhelm one with brooches, ceramics, vases, bags, or even kitchen mixers all decorated and embellished with flowers. Surprise your lady with sugar cookies, soaps, and candles all shaped into flowers. Artists can also render a unique piece that can speak of your feelings and leave your woman breathless. Bookstores and supermarkets are my favorite modern flower growers because they house the most interesting forms of this popular gift! I just saw a lovely recyclable grocery bag printed with mod looking flowers next to the local produce. The gift-wrapping section is my favorite bookstore aisle because they have pretty wrappers and bows with slightly embossed flowers. How lovely is that?My point is, whatever a woman says, do not just bite if she says she doesn’t like flowers. Do your research, pick on what interests her genuinely, and fuse in the floral element from there. It would be nice if you can actually shoot two birds with one stone: cast your message through flowers and captivate her with its immaculate and timeless beauty.

Meanings of Flowers

Posted by Earlan on November 7th, 2010  •  No Comments »

If you plan to walk down the aisle anytime soon, you should be aware that the flowers you carry might say more than you intended. That is right most flowers carry a meaning, or a special significance that has been passed down from generation to generation. We can trace this back to the Victorian Era. It was improper in those days for a man to come out and tell a lady how he felt, so he would choose a flower with special meaning and send it her instead. Because the meaning of flowers was so well known, the woman receiving them understood the message as clearly as if it was written on a piece of paper. As every flower lover knows, flowers have a language all their own. Every sentiment can be expressed with flowers. Wedding flowers are no different. For instance, you would not want to have yellow carnations at your wedding because yellow carnations mean disappointment and rejection.

Make sure you know what the flowers mean before you use them as your wedding flowers. There is a reason that roses are the most popular choice of flowers for brides. A white rose stands for innocence, beauty and charm-just the traits every bride wants to portray. A bride that chooses red roses for her wedding flowers is sending a message of passion and of fiery love. If dark pink roses are used for a wedding, the couple is expressing a thankfulness that they found each other. An ivy coloured Rose stands for fidelity in the marriage-something every new couple strives for. Pink roses mean perfect happiness but yellow roses mean jealousy. Sometimes, it is not the colour that holds the meaning but the type. A tea rose means I will always remember you but a dried white rose means I would rather die than lose my virtue. Rosebuds means beauty and youth but roses signify secrecy and silence. Roses are not the only flowers that hold meaning. Lilies are a very popular wedding flower. The most popular type of lily is the Calla Lily, which means beauty. Most lilies have beautiful meanings.

The white lily means it is heavenly to be with you while the yellow lily means I am walking on air. Did you know that the day lily is the Chinese symbol for Mother. The tiger lily means wealth and pride. Not all flowers have negative meanings, there are very few negative meanings for tulips. Tulips in general mean the perfect lover, this might be a good one to tuck into the buttonhole on his tux. Red tulips are a declaration of love while a yellow tulip means there is sunshine in your smile. If you are having a spring wedding, there is simply no better way to express your love for your future spouse than by carrying a bouquet of tulips. They are not only beautiful, but speak of an undying love. There are some flowers you can just look at and assume you know what they mean. Never be too hasty in assuming anything. For instance, when you look at a cactus you would think that there had to be a negative meaning for it ? wrong. A cactus means endurance and forever. This fits if you think about the cactus; they can survive anything. There are so many different types of wedding flowers that no one could name them all but here are a few more. Peonies mean shame. Orchids are the Chinese symbol for many children. Ferns and Petals is an online gifts and florist shop. No matter what wedding flowers you pick, no one is really going to know the meaning unless you tell them. Your wedding flowers, like your wedding, should be memorable and not based on superstition. Finding the meanings of flowers is like being superstitious about the groom seeing the bride in her wedding dress before the wedding.

We make our own luck. Ferns and Petals is an online florist shop. As you can see, the flowers that you choose for your wedding will definitely set the mood. Knowing that, before you select your flowers, determine what type of wedding and reception event you want to have. Once you do that, choosing the flowers will be a breeze
