It would take you days just to surf the many layers that make this marvelous city. Kolkata, a place to expect the most unusual and the most astonishing, is a maze of Victorian buildings, Indian bazaars, Bengali cuisines and a rich culture that typically defines the place. A city that is known around the world for personalities like Mother Teresa and Rabindranath Tagore it has much more to offer to its visitors, than one can think of. A hub for art, literature, theater and science, Kolkata has always been a treasure house for talents and gems. The capital of the erstwhile British Empire, Kolkata was once the largest city in the country. It has now lost the title only to Mumbai. It was Job Charnok who chose this place as a British trading post. Within a small span of time, the small trading post rose into the capital of a mighty empire and also the largest colonial trade center in Asia, referred to as the Jewel of the East. Though the structures have not been given a very good treatment, they still retain some of their grandeur even as they crumble. A major landmark in Kolkata and almost synonymous with it is the Victoria Memorial. An architectural genius and an English rival of the Mughal Taj, it is one of the finest art museums in the country. A visit to Kolkata is incomplete without a visit to this gem. Fort William is another must-visit again, merely for the fact that it is the cradle from where a small village grew into a metropolitan giant. It is a military area now, but can be visited with prior permission. The Marble Palace, a 19th century structure is known for its collection of va rious objects. Another laurel to the city is the Howrah Bridge, the busiest bridge in the world. Connecting Howrah to Kolkata it is named as Rabindra Setu. A master in engineering, it was built without using any nuts and bolts. Engineered to adjust height, the bridge was made to move up to allow big steamers to pass. Now the practice has been stopped though. Kolkata is home to the oldest and the finest cricket ground in the country too. A must visit for all cricket lovers; this is one place where much in history of cricket has taken place. A land of fairs and festivals, Kolkata gets an all different and enchanting look during one of the many fairs and festivals it observes. The biggest of these is the Durga Puja, a festival that celebrates the victory of Durga over evil. The entire air is infused with a festive spirit and elaborate rituals are observed with much religiosity. The best time to socialize and enjoy upon great food. The religious nature of Kolkata is enhanced by the many temples, and churches that are present in the city. The dominant Bengali population makes the Kalighat Kali temple one of the most revered religious spots. It is supposed to be one of the places where the pieces of body of Kali fell when Shiva danced the dance of destruction with her dead body. Another equally important temple in Kolkata is the Dakshineshwar Temple. It is the largest temple in the city built by Rani Rasmani. It is believed that Mother Goddess herself came to the Rani in her dreams and asked her to erect a temple for her on the bank of the Ganges. Kolkata is also home to the first Episcopal Church in the Eastern part of the world. The art and architectural genius that the structure presents is simply a treat to the eyes. The finest synagogue in the city is the Magen David Synagogue, is one of the oldest religious sites in the country too. Entertainment never ends in Kolkata. It is one place where you will find a lot of entertainment opportunities throughout. Truly artistic, the people of Kolkata have a flair for theater, music, dance and poetry. Becoming more happening with time, Kolkata has seen the coming up of many swanky bars and discotheques too. A shopper’s paradise the streets of Kolkata offer you a world to bargain for. Be ready to get the cheapest of deals for the most unusual and happening items. But make sure you have mastered the art of bargaining well. Central cottage industries emporium at Chowringee is a good place to shop for exquisite handicrafts. Shreeram arcade, shops on the arcade near Oberoi Grand, City Centre and Treasure Island are other good places in the city where one would love to shop. If you have a thing for shopping in Malls and swanky shopping arenas, Kolkata has some of those for you too. Try visiting New Market, AC Market, College Street or Dakshinapan Shopping Complex here. Take out good time to visit this city with unending marvels and mysteries.

A multi-faceted city, Delhi presents a glorious intertwining of the contemporary and the old. The very name of Delhi rolls out a picture of a powerful place that ruled many empires, a place where many mighty emperors rose and fell and the place that now governs the largest democracy in the world. Truly metropolitan to the core, Delhi is made of people from all corners of the country. Quite naturally, the city speaks a jumble of some odd vernaculars and has a culture which is a concoction of various elements.

Delhi is home to two different worlds altogether. One is the ancient world that still survives time and the other world is all new that shows the present and the future of the nation. Thanks to the masters who laid the city, Delhi is clearly marked out as Old Delhi and New Delhi. A visit to the older part takes you back in time while its contemporary counterpart talks of everything modern, contemporary and even futuristic.

The cradle for the Sultanate and later on the Mughals, Delhi is home to an impressive number of monuments and structures that command awe and amazement from all their beholders. The most formidable of these is the Red Fort, a massive structure by the Mughals. It still stands as the largest monument in the city and the symbol of a free India. It is the site where the Prime Minister of the country unfurls the national flag. Another fort in Delhi that holds much importance is the Old Fort. It is believed to be the fort of the legendary Rajput King, Prithviraj Chauhan. It was later taken up by Sher Shah and Humayun, so the elements of each ruler are present in here. A victory tower by a Sultan here is also another structural gem that adds to the wealth of Delhi. The tallest stone tower in the world; it is an architectural genius from the ancient engineers. A famous iron pillar adorns the courtyard of the tower. The pillar is again a masterpiece of metallurgy. It is known to be there since the fourth century and is still rust free. Another noted monument from the great builders, the Mughals, is the Tomb of Humayun. It is believed to be the predecessor of the world famous Taj Mahal. It was after this that the use of the famous marble, domes and gardens came into practice. Jantar Mantar stands as one of the finest examples of the advancement of Indian Science in the eighteenth century. It is one of the many observatories built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh erected for making astronomical observations. More of this old world of Delhi can be caught at the many museums the city affords. The National Gallery of Modern Art at Jaipur House is a treat for all art lovers. The National Rail Museum is a good place to see how the railways have evolved in the country. The National Museum is home to relics and artifacts right from Indus Valley Civilization to the most recent items. Home to people from all the parts of the country observing different religions and practices, Delhi is home to a good number of religious places too. A marvelous Italian structure here is the Church of the Sacred Heart. A famous church it is flooded by crowds during festivals. Another famous church here is the Cathedral Church of Redemption. It is known for hosting lavish concerts on festivals. A good number of Gurudwaras are also present in Delhi. The major gurudwaras here are the ones that were laid to commemorate the visits of the five Gurus to the city. A long reign of Muslims has brought a good number of mosques to the city. Some of them are architectural masterpieces and a heritage for the country. Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in the country is one of the most popular too. It is believed to house a hair from the beard of the Hazrat Mohammad. Another sacred pilgrimage here is the Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliyaa Dargah, the tomb of the famous Sufi saint. Distinguished temples in the city are Kalkaji Mandir, Digambar Mandir, Chattarpur Mandir, Lakshmi Narayan Mandir, ISKCON Temple and the Lotus Temple. A contemporary version of Delhi is New Delhi. It is here where the seat of the government is. The Parliament House or the center of all power is present here. The youth and the modern can be well seen in the most happening pockets of Delhi like the Cannaught Place, South Extension, Chandni Chowk, Greater Kailash and Palika Bazaar. A shoppers dream, the city offers a world of things to pick from. One of the swankiest shopping arenas is the Ansal Plaza, known for its international standards and global brands. Get a taste of the finest restaurants, food joints and multiplexes here. Its underground counterpart, the Palika Bazaar is one of the best places in the country to get the best bargains in electronics and branded clothes. Shopping with a traditional flavor can be had at Chandini Chowk. Though a bit congested, the markets overflow with shops selling the best and most unusual items. Most of these shops are over a century old. Take a good time in hand to explore the various facets of Delhi. It has a world to offer.

Although majority of Philippine flowers today were only introduced from other continents, from the popular rose to as simple as a santan flower, there are still some species of flowers that are native to the Philippines. One particular species of flower is now considered as an endangered species, pushed to the brink of extinction because of hunters that hunts and sells this flower to collectors. This is the Waling-Waling flower. These flowers are hunted because these species of flowers aren’t found in other Asian countries, not unlike the Sampaguita or the Arabian Jasmine. These flowers are only found in the Philippines. More about the Waling-Waling

The Waling-Waling Philippine flowers were given the scientific name as Euanthe sanderiana. Although it was first known as Vanda sanderiana, Rudolf Schlechter separated Euanthe from Vanda in 1914 due to structural differences in the flowers. It has two forms, pink and white, also referred to as alba. For breeding purposes and registration by the Royal Horticultural Society, however, it is still treated as a Vanda.

The Euanthe sanderiana or Waling-Waling is endemic to Mindanao in the provinces of Davao, Cotabato, and Zamboanga where it is found on the trunks of dipterocarp trees at elevations below 500 meters. Over-collected, the plant is considered rare in nature. It is also often used in hybridization. Studies have shown that when raised at high altitude, the plant bears flowers early compared to those on lower altitude. Hailed as the “Queen of Philippine Orchids,” the waling-waling is considered by many as the country’s best orchid variety due to its many stunning colorful hybrids. The captivating trait of these unique Philippine flowers led to hunters and orchid collectors from all over the world harvesting the species almost to extinction. The decline was stemmed, however, when tissue culture was performed in order to repropagate the orchid. Types of Waling-Waling The Philippine Orchid Society, which incorporates an image of the flower in its logo, states that the species has three varieties:
