It’s Time to Give Mom Something Special

Posted by Earlan on November 19th, 2010  •  No Comments »

Roughly three weeks from now, flower shops will once again be flocked by men and children of all ages, hauling up only the best for the number one woman our lives: our mothers and wives. Next to the ever popular Christmas and Valentines, Mothers Day is one of the most widely celebrated holidays around the globe. While it’s celebrated different days of the year, we celebrate it here in the Philippines every second Sunday of May (May 11 this 2008), as adopted from the Western calendar. The earliest recognized Mothers Day celebration dates back to ancient Greece in honor of the Mother of the gods, Rhea. The Romans, who have equally popular mythological gods have been honoring Rhea’s Roman counterpart, Juno, through a holiday called “Matronalia” where mothers are usually given flowers and gifts. During the 16th century, the mothers from United Kingdom and Ireland are released by their masters every fourth Sunday of Lent (exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday) to be with their children and families hence the day has been called “mothering Sunday”. The American tradition of honoring mothers every second Sunday of May has only begun in May 9, 1914 through the efforts of Julia Ward Howe (wrote a Mother’s Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament in 1870), Ann Jarvis (she attempted to improve sanitation through what she called Mothers’ Work Days in 1858), and Anna Jarvis (the daughter of the previously mentioned who also started a movement to impose a memorial day for women in 1907). Shopping for Mothers Day has never been simpler these days where everything is available in the malls or even online. Flower shops have hundreds of arrangement and gift suggestions for the confused gift giver. Start off your selection with an exquisite or quirky (whatever fits your mom’s personality) vase. This should be a good practice to ward off those boxes and tissue wrappers that your mom will just ditch within the day. From there, check out the vast selection of flowers this summer. They are not only colorful but can also be inexpensive (naturally because of the supply). Pair your customized flower and vase with the book she’s been dying to read, a Teflon pan to replace the one you damaged by scraping off the coating with a metal spoon or take her to a scrub, massage, and wrap date at the spa. The key is to give her something that will truly make her feel like a queen so there’s no room for going overboard here. She’s worked very hard year round for you and it’s your chance to say thank you with everyone else around the globe.

The Special Thing with Roses

Posted by Earlan on July 27th, 2010  •  No Comments »

I asked ten women which among the three cut blossoms can make them feel special or giddy the most: roses, lilies, or tulips. Roses got four votes while lilies and tulips got three each. While most women today say that they want something different and unexpected, I was quite confused why they still chose roses when other choices were presented to them. Out of the hundreds and thousands of cut plants in existence, have you ever wondered what makes the roses so special and popular after all these years? The rose has many times appeared in both mythological stories and history. A white rose from the Garden of Eden blushed and turned into red when Eve saw and kissed it. The Goddess of Purity turned a fair Greek maiden named Rodanthe into a white rose at the temple of Artemis. Faced with her suitors’ passionate gazes, the maiden blushed and turned into red. A handful of stories from both the Greek and Roman myths also associate the God of Love, Eros, to roses where rearranging his name forms the word “rose”. Our ancestors were enthralled by these stories and soon found themselves dedicating the rose to their gods. A white rose clearly symbolizes the Blessed Mother Mary while the five-petalled red rose recalls the five wounds of Christ. During the Roman aristocracy, Nero requested that his floors be covered with layers and layers of rose petals when he is expecting guests. Shakesphere also seems to be fan as he narrates in Henry VI Part1: “opposing parties pick different colored roses at the Temple Church”. Roses have long been a symbol of heraldry as well reason why it is visible on coats of arms, coins, banners, seals, paintings, stamps, even on emblems of both England and some of the American states. Over time, the rose has acquired its reputation as a symbol of exemplar virtues, compassion, purity, and gallantry. What’s most remarkable though would be its association to women: buds were sought by butterflies (as men do); its beautiful blooms and aromatic essence that seems to give one a warrant to pluck; and as it wilts and browns, it fades and unfortunately forgotten thereafter. Between all these stages, roses and women both prick and inflict pain with their sharp thorns. Based on the definitions and pieces of history above, we can definitely tell that the rose will always be recognized and treasured as a source of delight to its receiver, whatever the meaning it has in tow nor whatever form it takes. This should be a good eye opener to everyone who’s handed a bloom, as there is so much more beyond its captivating beauty and aroma.

The True Meaning of Sending Red Roses to That Special Someone

Posted by Earlan on November 4th, 2009  •  12 Comments »

Who doesn?t like flowers? Whether it?s to celebrate a special event like a birthday or graduation, to cheer someone up, or the most common use of flowers: to declare love for that special someone. Known as a universal gift for every occasion, flowers can simply brighten up one?s day. There are various types of flowers, but one of the most common flowers that are more popular are roses.

Traditionally, roses are given by men to women to symbolize admiration and love. Did you know that the different colors of roses connote different meanings too? The different colors are ways of expressing feelings and emotions. Let?s start with the least popular colors first. Orange roses indicate enthusiasm, desire and fascination. Pink roses convey happiness and gracefulness, thus, used in birthday parties of women. Blue roses, like their color are used to describe the uniqueness of the recipient. Dark pink sends out gratitude, while light pink describes one?s joy and sweetness. Peach roses have the same meaning as pink roses too. Yellow simply means caring and symbolizes friendship, while white roses express purity, innocence, heavenly and charm.

Let?s now move on to the most popular rose color: red roses. They say if you give a bouquet of red roses to someone, it means you really love them. But what do red roses really mean? In a nutshell, red roses mean love, respect, and passion. This is probably why most roses given out on Valentine?s Day, are red. For the longest time, red roses have also been used to depict strong romantic feelings for someone. A gentleman who gives a dozen red roses to a woman, clearly has deep feelings for that woman. Seen as the classic rose color, this color is also seen in most movies or even read in classic fairytales.

Red roses, when combined with other colors, give out a different meaning altogether. When combined with white roses, they can signify courage and unity. Red and yellow rose combinations are for happy feelings, and joviality. For most honeymoon suites that use scattered petals as lovely room decorations, red is also the most prominent color. This is probably to promote excitement and romance in the bedroom. Even the leaves of the roses have significance too: hope.

A different meaning corresponds to the kind of red rose a gentleman gives out too. Cardinal red signifies desire, and firery red is for the flames of passion. A deep red rose is for admiration, or sometimes, embarrassment.Different amounts of red roses have several meanings too. A single red rose, for instance, has a simple yet powerful meaning: ?I love you.? Two roses joined together mean gratitude, and a dozen roses is the ultimate declaration of love. Twenty five red roses is sent out to congratulate someone, while fifty roses mean unconditional love.

Even if there are a lot of flowers available in flower shops, online shopping is readily available too. Some flower directories are also available online. Red roses are still the most romantic. They will always remain a classic because there?s no more passionate way to tell your significant other you love her: other than red roses.
